MUD or Multi User Dungeon is the oldskool online multi player game. The wikipedia entry says it best, but it's basically a text based roleplaying type game that's been around for a long damn time. Most people discovered MUD's through BBS's, you know back before that WWW thing.
If you want to check out a good MUD , you should head over to TorilMud, TorilMud has been through several incarnations. Starting out as Sojourn, one of the originial Diku mud's, heading through to Sojourn2 and 3, and in it's current stage as TorilMud. As you might have guessed from the name, it is based on the Forgotten Realms world. Oh and make sure you have some spare time, MUD can bcome quite addicting, ask those who have been playing for the past 10 yrs.
One of those accursed MMORPG's has finally sucked me in. I had resisted them for years, but Eve Online has finally taken my money.
This game is simply brilliant, the graphics are insane, the universe is endless, the history and backgrounds of the 4 races are well done. The RP environment is alive and kicking. Plenty of RP corps to become a part of, each one exploring the many sides of the 4 main Races. Caldari being the best, but then again I'm biased
The PvP is exceptional, and there is plenty to do for the non PvPers. I'm not much of a strictly PvP type, but Eve has built a universe where each system has a security rating, lawless space is open PvP, while high security space is for those who may not want to PvP.
